Campaign for Real Ale

Get Involved!

Vale of Belvoir is one of the smallest CAMRA branches in the country, numbering just over 400 out of CAMRA’s 192,000 members. Currently, the branch’s campaigning is coordinated by a dedicated group of volunteers, and we’d love to have you involved. There are plenty of ways you can join in, even if you can only spare a small amount of time:

Come along to a branch meeting.

These take place every month, usually on the first Wednesday of the month, and are held in a different pub every time. They are a great opportunity to visit new places and meet like-minded people, to learn about and discuss what’s happening throughout the area’s pubs and breweries.

Support our campaigning activities

Despite pubs being such an important part of our local heritage and communities, they are under threat of closure all the time, especially in rural areas such as ours. In the past years, pubs in Aslockton, Barkestone, Bottesford, Bingham, Eaton, Kinoulton and Stathern have closed.

If you are interested in local heritage, history or politics, or believe that pubs are an important part of any community, we’d love to have your help in our campaigning.

Drink real ale, cider and perry

Most of us joined CAMRA because we love real ale, cider or perry, and we also love going to the pub – the health benefits of responsible, moderate, social drinking are well-documented. By going to WhatPub, you can then rate your beer. It takes just a few seconds, but every score put in by CAMRA members helps with selecting pubs for the Good Beer Guide, CAMRA’s flagship publication.

At every branch meeting we identify which pubs have not had any scores on Whatpub in the last three months. Then, members are encouraged to visit these pubs, sample the beer and rate it. This means that we will get a consistent picture throughout the year of the quality of beer available in all the pubs in our area. If you’re someone who likes trying different pubs, then this great to get involved in.

For 30 years CAMRA has promoted real cider and perry alongside real ale. If you are a fan of real cider or perry, we would love to hear from you.

Deliver magazines

Our branch has a regular column in the Nottingham Drinker magazine, which is distributed to pubs in the Vale of Belvoir by a team of volunteers. If you can spare about an hour every two months to help with this, we would love to hear from you.

Judging Pub of the Year candidates

One of the highlights of the year in our branch is when we run our Pub of the Year competition. We choose our winners using the same criteria as the national competition, but really, it’s a case of going to a pub and writing a short review afterwards. This year’s top four pubs were separated by just 2% (based on their average score), so every score counts.

Our branch also awards a Cider Pub of the Year. Again, if you enjoy real cider or perry, then it would be great to have you involved in this.
